In 1881 Rangai authored a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Rangai Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Rangai). It included the thirteen pictures of flowers and (or) birds shown in this gallery. Rangai’s drawing style was modeled on a Chinese style whose objective was to depict the internal spirit of the living objects appearing in a picture rather than their true external form and colors.
